The Slovenian Ice Hockey League is the highest level ice hockey league in the country of Slovenia. The Championship is open only to Slovenian teams. During the regular season these teams play in the Inter-National League the Austrian Hockey League. The Championship takes place at the end of the regular season.

History[]

The Slovenian Hockey league used to exist between 1991 and 2009, with the championship being held at the end as the playoffs. Over time some Slovenian teams entered the Austrian Hockey League, and joined in at the playoffs. In the 2007–08 season there was an issue, as a Croatian team, KHL Medveščak, qualified for the playoffs. As the Slovenian Champion could only be a team from Slovenia, they did not take part in the playoffs. The following season, 2008–2009, Medvescak played in the playoffs. In the case that they won the best Slovenian team would have been announced the Slovenian Champion and Medvescak would have been the league's champion. However, Medvescak was swept in the playoffs.

The Slohokej Liga was established and played its first season in 2009–10, but was cancelled after the 2011–12 season.
