History of hockey in the Philippines
Manila sent three teams to the 1998 Nortel tournament in Hong Kong. One was a kids team, another was was a women's team and the third one was a men's team.
The Manila Ice Hockey League was founded in 2008 and the first league match was staged on November 24. It was initially known as the Manila Adult Ice Hockey League, but later dropped the "Adult" part, deeming it redundant. The league is divided into multiple divisions to account for varying skill levels.
Prior to the league's formation, only brief tournaments had been contested at the small South Mall rink and the defunct Mega Mall facility (which had an obtrusive pillar located at center ice). The opening of the Mall of Asia ice rink provided an Olympic-sized playing surface for use. A team known as the Manila Predators won the Asian men's B division ice hockey 5s championship in Hong Kong in 2011.
The Philippine Ice Hockey Committee was formed with the objective of further developing the sport in the country. The Federation of Hockey League in the Philippines was later established in 2015, and the country joined the IIHF as an associate member on May 19, 2016.
The national team made its debut at the 2005 HKAHC Invitational Amateur Ice Hockey Tournament in Kowloon Bay, Hong Kong. They lost all four games at the tournament. Almost 10 years later, they returned to play in the 2014 HKAHC Invitational Amateur Ice Hockey Tournament. Their first "official" international came against Macau at that tournament. The Philippines won, 10-0. They won four out of five games at the tournament in all.
The Philippines also participated in the Hong Kong 5s Tournament and the HKAHC Invitational Amateur Ice Hockey Tournament in 2015, going 4-1 at both tournaments. The inaugural Philippine National Team selection camp was held in January 2015.
The Philippines Ice Hockey Tournament was an international tournament staged from November 25-28, 2015 at the newly-opened outdoor rink of the SM Mall of Asia in Pasay City. It is one of four rinks currently open in the country. The other facilities are at Megamall, Southmall and the Seaside Cebu Ice Skating Rink.
